Have you ever decided to just take a look at the free section of Craigslist? Well I like to do this every few weeks to see what I can find and it amazes me what some people just give away! Then again I haven’t actually gone and picked up any item before as maybe it’s just advertised as “free” but in fact when you go to pick up they might ask for money? Guess I just think why are these people just giving away these items when they can totally be reused. That’s my creative side coming out in wanting to refurnish every interesting piece of furniture I see. Finding all these great pieces just makes me want to open a little store even more now!
Below are just some of the items I have found under the free section this week and how I see it could be refinished.
1. Wooden Dresser: Via Craigslist
This is a super cute vintage dresser! The description says it works well and in front of a house being constructed, so I can assume they maybe more pieces left out on the curb. This dresser looks in good condition, with quick coat of paint and new hardware it would be good as new. You can paint this one in any color really, but I’m thinking using two colors, one for the outside and front of the base and then another or stain for the front of the drawers. Similar to the images below found via pinterest, yet they have chosen to keep the stain on showing on the drawers.
2. Armoire: Via Craigslist
Okay I know this one looks a bit scary but I can see great potential for it. The description says it’s not in great shape with some drawer rails broken and the outer doors don’t stay closed. Not to worry as I’m thinking to get rid of the doors and the drawers within. This piece does need a little more time but think it could be used as storage in a bedroom or maybe a dinning room. So like I said I would remove the inside drawers and outer doors so the unit is open. Then on the inside add a few shelves for storage while keeping the bottom drawers for more storage. Give is a fresh coat of paint and updated the hardware and it could look something like the below image I found from pinterest. It might be hard to see it now but I totally think it could be done!
3. Small Couch: Via Craigslist
Small yet cute couch for the condo like spaces out there. This couch has a nice shape and the description says its in great condition. Not sure about the suede dark green fabric but since its free I would invest in a good fabric and recover the whole thing. Found a few options for inspiration but there are lots of fabrics out there to choose from!
4. Block Skids: Via Craigslist
Skids or pallets, pallets or skids, whatever you call them they are always available on craigslist. Now I have never actually made anything from wooden skids but I have heard and read you can do a lot with them. I’ve read DIY post from coffee table, dinning tables, and even patio furniture made from these guys. Seems like there is not shortage of them and what a waste of wood if they are not being used. Below are just a few examples I have seen on how to reuse skids.
So these are just a few items I found off of craiglist that I would have loved to transform but unfortunitely I don’t have the space. But gives you an idea of what you can do with pieces people throw away. Stay tuned for next months craigslist finds!
